چکیده

When cotton linters were soaked in cold 10-percent sodium hydroxide, washed, a nd neutralized, and transferred successively to methyl alcohol and benzene, and carefully dried a t reduced pressure, a surface area as high as 71.3 square meters per gram was obtained by the Brunauer , Emmett, T e ller technique. Previous areas for untreated cotton were a ll below 1 sq uare meter per gram. Linters carried t hrough the above steps after soaking in water instead of alkali had an a rea a s h igh as 47.3 square meters per gram . When t he alkalit rea ted sample was condi tio ned in water vapor to 3.3 pe rcent gain in weight, t he surface decreased to 31.6 square mete rs per gram ; fur ther conditioning to an J LO-percent gain in weigh t decreased t he surface to 2.1 square meters per gram. The isot herms of the treated samples s howed strong hysteres is, whereas the isotherms of un t reated cotton showed li t tle or no hysteresis . Calculations of pore s ize distri bution by t he method of Wheeler a nd Shull indicated these materials have rather na rrow distribu tions, t he a lkal itreated materia l havin g a maximum at a pore radius of abo ut 20 Angstroms and the water-soaked materi a l a maximum at about 16 Angstroms.

Hierachical Porous Carbon Structures from Cellulose Acetate Fibers

This study describes the transformation of cellulose acetate filters into porous carbon structures by a facile, direct process. Filters from cigarettes were used as the source for cellulose acetate filters. Carbon was obtained by high-temperature treatment under inert conditions without extensive preparative methods. The resulting carbon materials showed structural features on different length ...

Quaternized Cellulose Hydrogels as Sorbent Materials and Pickering Emulsion Stabilizing Agents

Quaternized (QC) and cross-linked/quaternized (CQC) cellulose hydrogels were prepared by cross-linking native cellulose with epichlorohydrin (ECH), with subsequent grafting of glycidyl trimethyl ammonium chloride (GTMAC). Materials characterization via carbon, hydrogen and nitrogen (CHN) analysis, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR)/13C solid state NMR spectr...

Sorption-desorption of indaziflam in selected agricultural soils.

Indaziflam, a new alkylazine herbicide that inhibits cellulose biosynthesis, is under current development for soil applications in perennial crops and nonagricultural areas. Sorption and desorption of indaziflam in six soils from Brazil and three soils from the United States, with different physical chemical properties, were investigated using the batch equilibration method. Sorption kinetics d...

Preparation and Characterization of Regenerated Cellulose Microspheres and the Adsorption of Pectinase

Porous cellulose beads were prepared through a simple, facile, and inexpensive method. The resultant microspheres exhibited good spherical shape with a diameter of 1 to 2 mm. Their morphology, pore structure, and physical properties were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and nitrogen adsorption. The regenerated cellulose was shown by scanning electron microscopy ...

Gas Sorption in Clay Mineral Systems

-Sorption isotherms for four gases (N2, A, Kr and C O 2 ) , commonly used in specific surface area and pore structure measurements, have been accurately determined on a number of clay mineral and oxide systems. Specific surface areas obtained by application of the BET theory to these isotherms illustrate the extent to which the apparent cross-sectional areas for these sorbed gases vary with sur...
